General Anesthesia for Dental Work San Diego

Dental implants can be life-changing. By restoring your smile and your ability to eat the foods you love, your confidence and quality of life get a boost as well. But first, you have to get through the implant placement procedure.
When it comes to extensive dental work, it’s common for anxiety about the procedure to result in long-term procrastination. If anxiety is keeping you from restoring your smile and living your best life, you may want to consider general anesthesia. At Smile Designers, we offer general anesthesia by an in-office dentist anesthesiologist who will help keep you comfortable while we perform the dental work.

General anesthesia for dental implants

Full smile restoration with dental implants requires a significant amount of time in the dental chair. While it is sometimes possible to break longer procedures into multiple visits, many people prefer to get it all done at once.  General anesthesia for dental implants is a great option for those who want to easily restore their smile in a single day. It’s also helpful for those who have high levels of anxiety, which can get in the way of dental work and extend the time it takes to perform the procedure. By helping you sleep, dental anesthesiology can make your dental implant procedure safer and faster. Our anesthesiologist will help you drift off safely by:

  • Administering one or a combination of medications, which may include anti-nausea medications
  • Monitoring your vital signs
  • Identifying any signs of allergies or other complications
  • Managing changes in your vitals

You won’t feel a thing, and you’ll sleep the whole time. When the procedure is over, the anesthesiologist will reverse the medications to gently wake you.

How long does general anesthesia last?

When the dental anesthesiologist reverses your medications, you’ll slowly begin to wake up, but the drugs will take some time to leave your system. There are several factors that determine how long your general dental anesthesia lasts.  These include:

  • Which drugs were administered
  • Dose of the medications
  • Length of time you were under
  • How healthy you are

In general, it’s important to note that anytime you undergo general anesthesia, you’ll need someone to drive you home from your dental appointment. It’s best to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery for 24 hours.

How much does general anesthesia cost for dental work?

Typically dentist anesthesiologists charge per hour, and you can expect to pay $400 to $600 per hour. You’ll only pay for the time you’re asleep, but certain factors will make the total cost of your dental anesthesia higher or lower. These include:

  • Type of drugs administered
  • Duration of the dental treatment
  • Location of the dental practice

Keep in mind that most dentist anesthesiologists lower their per-hour rate for longer procedures. More extensive dental work, such as full-arch or full-mouth dental implants, will typically result in a lower per-hour cost.
